    1. At first glance I thought the pic was from “MMD: Cellphone Paranoia Girl” but it looks to be a higher quality than either of those vids. Guess it might be a remake of that, which I would be perfectly ok with since that vid was awesome.

  1. I took a look at the numbers you posted on Patreon and they are horrendous to say the least. Assuming they take a fee contingent on the number actually processed, then they have a nearly 30% error in the amount they receive each month. That is a completely unacceptable number and any company I’ve ever worked for would have fired my ass for having that large of a disparity in my projected earnings, and would have been right to do so.

I think the major problem comes from their business model. Having potentially 30 days between when someone pledges money and it actually getting processed is a ridiculous amount of time. If there were an error with someone’s credit card then most people will forget about it by the time the charge occurs. When’s the last time you gave a second thought to something you spent $10 on a month ago? The same also goes for people who, as you claim, cheat the system. They can pledge money on the 1st of the month and cancel on the 29th and have a month of free content with no repercussions. Both of these problems should have occurred to someone during the planning phase of this company, if not then someone needs to be fired.

Furthermore, the answer to both of these problems is painfully simple. When someone pledges money, give them 24-48 hours to change their minds then charge the account and hold the money in escrow until the end of the month at which time it gets distributed to the artists. If you choose to cancel your pledge within the window, then you are locked out of any premium Patreon content for 1 whole payment cycle. Anyone who legitimately wants to support a site could then address problems with a CC before it gets sent along at the end of the month. Anyone who wants to cheat would still have up to 48hrs to steal what they want (being able to cancel pledges is something Patreon advertises so it has to stay) but they would be locked out of anything the artist makes for at least 30 days. While I have no illusions that this would 100% fix the problem, it should get the error down to single digits at least.

Lastly, the escrow account could potentially have millions in it every month. It’s effectively a short term loan for Patreon to do with as they please for 30 days. Even if you play it conservatively to avoid risk, you can earn a half a point at worst which is free money for you before you send someone else’s money to someone else. If this sounds shady it’s because it is. However it’s perfectly legal in the US and everyone from school boards, to banks, to state governments do it.

    1. Yeah I had a hunch there were some here who didn’t know about this. From others I have asked it is the same story. Patreon is good, but can improve in several areas without breaking their idealistic founding reasons.

these “good samaritan” ideals patreon was created from allows this to happen, as yes you mentioned it is also what they advertize. I do agree that is should charge within 24 hours or so. I think they just press run on a script at the start of the month or it is a cron job or something heh.
I would at least like for them to automatically drop people if the card declined like two month in a row at least. That seems fair. Because I don’t have any ability to delete/reject/block patrons who always have declined payments and I don’t like my number being inflated that much. They sent a e-mail while ago saying there going to do things to show a more accurate value.

The only time they charge the amount immediately when you pledge is for amounts over $100.
